Oppenheimer (Oppenheim), Samuel
(1630-1703)
   Austrian financier and philanthropist. He was Leopold I's agent and financier, and was the first Jew to be allowed to settle in Vienna. He helped to finance Leopold's wars with the Turks and the War of the Spanish Succession. In 1697 he was accused of conspiring to murder Samson Wertheimer, but was acquitted. Among his benefactions were support for the poor, Jewish scholars and Judah Hasid ha-Levi's movement for a Jewish settlement in Palestine.
